We’re Back: Announcing the 2022 reWarding5K

When it started, it was just five friends trying to pull off a 5K to honor a great friend that was taken away far too soon. We thought we’d get 25 people to sign up – 30 if we were lucky. And 50 runners? That was our high-water mark.

But in a short amount of time, we met our first goal. Then just as quickly we surpassed it. Finally, on a not-so-cold day in November, 2021, we crushed our goals in the inaugural running of the reWarding5K.

And in 2022, we’re doing it again but this time, we want to make it even better.

After donating over $10,000 to the Mario Lemieux Foundation, earmarking an additional $500 in scholarships, and drawing over 100 participants in its first year, the reWarding5K is returning for another running of the memorial event on Nov. 13, 2022, at North Park just north of Pittsburgh.

Last year, over 100 participants took part in the inaugural running of the reWarding5K, which was created to celebrate the life of Adam F. Ward, who lost his brief and sudden battle with Hepatosplenic T cell Lymphoma on Nov. 8, 2020. The goal of the ReWarding 5K is to commemorate Adam’s life and continue with his tradition of giving and making other people’s lives better through shared activities.

Individual sponsorships from friends and family as well as contributions from area businesses combined with the proceeds from the 138 registered runners to enable the reWarding5K to donate $10,150 to the Mario Lemieux Foundation.

The Foundation was created by Adam’s all-time favorite hockey player and legendary Pittsburgh Penguin Mario Lemieux to support his goal of finding a cure of cancer. The event also enabled the committee to dedicate $250 scholarships for lacrosse players at North Hills (Pittsburgh) and Unity Reed (Manassas, Va.), two programs connected with Adam during his coaching tenure.

In addition, the reWarding5K planning committee contributed funding to have a brick, inscribed with Adam’s name, laid at the USA Lacrosse Headquarters in Baltimore. The brick will also have the letters “ SJHS,” and “NHHS” inscribed, signifying the two schools for which Adam coached lacrosse.

Registration for the 2022 reWarding5K opens today. Sign up early to take advantage of last year’s prices before they increase on June 1. We’re doing it bigger and better than before so stay tuned for some surprises, big announcements, and fun. Join us for the second running of the reWarding5K and help us crush our goals and raise even more money for the Mario Lemieux Foundation.
